Providence Health & Services Executive Director, Information Services (Citrix) Virtual Application Delivery in Anaheim, California



The Executive Director of Information Services (Citrix) Virtual Application Delivery will be based in one of the following locations: Portland OR, Renton, WA or Anaheim, CA. Will be responsible for delivering and managing the portfolio of deployment technologies for deploying virtualized applications across the enterprise. These services will be designed to provide measurable value to the business, producing increased operational efficiency, system reliability and availability, and strategic cost savings to the organization. The Executive Director will also be responsible for collaboratively evaluating, integrating, and maintaining enterprise-based Application Delivery Controllers into the PSJH environment. A core expectation will be to implement and maintain engineering standards and policies related to these emerging technologies.

The Executive Director will be responsible for managing both Operational and Engineering teams. These teams will leverage the technology portfolio to implement high valued, reliable, and scalable business solution. The Executive Director will be responsible for maintaining all standards of practice for the use of enterprise virtualized application delivery technologies. These standards will ensure proactive planning and forecasting measures are operationalized to manage business demand and exceed business expectations.

The Executive Director and teams will work collaboratively across TEO Service Lines in support of enterprise technology deployments, automation and innovation initiatives, and participate in re-engineering Virtualization Application Delivery solutions for existing technology issues across the enterprise. The Executive Director and teams are responsible for the automation of image deployment, including the monitoring and alerting involved in these systems. A core responsibility of this role

Additional core responsibilities include establishing and managing adherence to standards and polices, and build and support a professional, creative, and collaborative team. The Executive Director will maintain strategic vendor relationships, ensuring innovative strategies are incorporated into future roadmaps. The Executive Director and teams establish the standards for Virtualization Application Delivery Server configurations and ensure tools are available to monitor and remediate variances from the standards. High availability, security compliance, and disaster recovery of compute, and disaster recovery of compute and appliance resources is a responsibility of this Executive Director and requires close collaboration with the Cloud Engineering and Operations, Network Engineering & Operations, Caregiver Experience Engineering & Operations, and Information Security teams. The Executive Director of Virtual Application Delivery is responsible for the strategy and roadmap to provide automated build, deployment, and configuration of all Virtual Application Delivery hosts as well as the strategy and roadmap for enabling rapid growth in the Virtual Application environment and determining the evolution of application virtualization technologies to cloud-based products and services.


Core Responsibilities:

  • High level of Senior Management; reports to an Executive Director

  • Strategic (4 years or longer) in focus.

  • Provides leadership to multiple operations that either constitute, or support, a significant percentage of the organization's revenues.

  • Uses complex business information of varying types (to include financial; marketing; legal; functional) to manage strategies.

  • Accomplishes work through subordinate senior-level managers; and/or high level individual contributors.

  • Identifies and implements changes and improvements that accomplish long-range business objectives.

Strategic Responsibilities:

  • Monitoring, evaluating, and integrating emerging technologies into the PSJH environment; responsible for implementing engineering standards and policies related to emerging technologies.

  • Delivering virtualization technology solutions that support engineering, standard design, standard configuration and maintenance standards for PSJH.

  • Guides team to engineer technical solutions to meet customer requirements with a balanced view toward performance, availability, data security, and cost effectiveness.

  • Familiarity with Security, cloud services and automation, Database technologies (e.g. oracle & SQL), Storage and Backup Technologies, Client Systems technologies, UNIX and Windows server, orchestration technologies and tools.

  • Collaborates with other IS teams to discover and realize innovation in virtualization services, Security Database, Client Systems UNIX and Windows server and Server Virtualization techniques, technologies, and tools.

  • Maintains forward looking and strategic partnerships with key technology vendors.

Management Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for the implementation of standards and policies across all disciplines for enterprise virtualization operational and engineering services.

  • Responsible for budgeting and the expenditures for all information technology infrastructure and research services related to virtualization operational and engineering services.

  • Provides responsive leadership to delegate, coordinate, and motivate staff; evaluates performance for direct reports and for contractors/other peoples’ direct reports; works with individuals and HR to improve performance as needed.

  • Serves as a member of the EHR and Virtual Application Delivery management team, providing input for decisions affecting PSJH as a whole and their customers.

  • Builds consensus and drives to agreement upon a course of action where there are multiple perspectives.

  • Responsible for managing the daily activities of support, process, and new project activities for an operations and engineering team and coordinating the utilization of staff needed to assist with other projects.

  • Responsible for assisting with the development of the operating and/or capital budgets; responsible for the analysis, monitoring, and reconciliation of those budgets.

  • Responsible for hiring, training, and developing staff to ensure the team has both the technical and organizational skills to effectively maintain operations and engineering support as measured by established service levels; conducts and oversees evaluations and establishes performance goals of the staff; resolves disciplinary problems, grievances, and other sensitive personnel matters.

  • Develops staff training plans and identifies opportunities for on-the-job training; recommends formal training options.

  • Establishes and maintains excellent standards in dealing with customers, vendors, and staff in the daily working of the team.

  • Monitors and provides input to the Executive Director Electronic Health Record Infrastructure and Virtual Application Delivery regarding services used for outsourced services and contract compliance.

  • Facilitates procurement of outsourced consultants and contractors with requisite skills to augment the Virtual Application Delivery Team to meet PSJH business needs.

Operational Responsibilities

  • Responsible to support operational teams by serving as an escalation point for technology related issues; takes ownership to conduct root cause analysis and recommends corrective actions to remediate known issues.

  • Oversees operations for documentation and standards functions.

  • Serves as sponsor and/or owner, as appropriate, for technology projects and initiatives within areas of accountability.

  • Ensures systems are engineered for optimal availability, reliability, scalability, and performance. Creates documents and refines operational processes.

  • Holds vendors responsible for delivery of contracted products and services.

  • Treats all others with respect and demonstrates excellence, justice and compassion in daily work.

  • Maintains the strict confidentiality of all information, including financial/operational, employee/human resource, healthcare/patient data and information.

  • Manage hardware, software and tool license purchases and usage, and vendor relationships.

  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Executive Director Electronic Health Record Infrastructure and Virtual Application Delivery.

Other Responsibilities:

  • Advocates Virtual Application Delivery goals and commitments; understands the vision of PSJH and is able to deploy that vision through functional areas.

  • Knows when to proactively communicate with leadership about issues and problems that exist in their own functional area; performs daily interaction with staff; holds regular team meetings.

  • Develops effective working relationships at all organizational levels

  • Maintains technical fluency and works to increase knowledge and skills.

  • Participates, as needed, in critical incident on-call rotation; carries a pager, cell phone and ensures availability during specified hours of coverage.

  • May be required to travel up to 25% of work schedule.

  • Defines processes to manage end of life products.

  • Collaborates with Cloud Engineering and Operations to drive collection of lifecycle data on current products.

  • Creates policies and processes pertaining to managing hardware, software, and application lifecycles.

Additional Responsibilities - Resource Management

  • Collaborates track resource usage.

  • Provides monthly OpEx/CapEx actual (estimated) and forecast.

  • Provides resource capacity and utilization information to management.

  • Provides resource availability for planning use.


We service 65 thousand simultaneous users in our Citrix system where we provide load balancing for the data load. You will need to have previously worked in a cloud computing environment and need to understand the technical roadmap and nuances of the current state and how we will migrate over to the Azure cloud. The team needs to transform be able to operate in Azure in an automated dev-ops environment.

We have 4 to 5 projects going on simultaneously that are mix of each of our partner organizations. We are looking to streamline processes and synchronize them in order to work together.

You will help form the team into a very trusting and collaborative environment. There will be a complete refresh of the software environment with new HW, OS, SW etc. Majority of this work will happen in the Azure cloud.

Training will be vitally important and a formal plan and assessment process must be created, put into place and implemented for the team.

Operational readiness is of optimal importance so you will need to have strong Cirtix expertise.



Required education and experience for this position include:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Business Management, Information Sciences, or related field of study; or equivalent educ/experience.

  • More than 10 years of related experience - prefer 12 years or more.

  • More than 10 years of leadership experience.

  • Strong experience working with the latest versions of Citrix such as LTSR, 7.15, Citrix Cloud and others supporting 10s of thousands of simultaneous users.

  • Demonstrated problem solving skills.

  • Demonstrated analytical skills and data-driven approach.

  • Strong verbal communication and listening skills.

  • Ability to effectively build relationships with customers, executive management, and other stakeholders through positive interaction and problem identification and resolution.

  • Thorough understanding and has extensive experience in implementing a virtualization services engineering strategy and operationalizing and measuring the business value of this strategy.

  • Thorough understanding of industry leading virtualization technologies and extensive experience in leveraging these technologies to support business objectives.

  • Thorough understanding of virtualization technologies and extensive experience in the use of these tools to drive business outcomes. Should have advanced knowledge of technologies such as ESX, EXSI, Hyper-V, Citrix XenServer, Citrix XenDesktop, Citrix Application Delivery Controller, VRA, VRO, Puppet, Chef, Ansible, GitHub, docker, and other similar and open source technologies.

  • Exceptional understanding and experience with IT Security, Network, Telecom, Database technologies (e.g. Oracle & SQL), Storage and Backup technologies, Client Systems technologies, UNIX and Windows server, Automation and Server Virtualization (e.g. VMWare) techniques, technologies, and tools.

Preferred education and experience for this position include:

  • Master's Degree in Computer Science, Business Management, Information Sciences, or related field of study; or equivalent educ/experience.

  • ITIL Certification

  • Citrix experience in a Pubic Cloud such as Azure.
