THE ROLE

Providence Alaska seeks an innovative, collaborative, and experienced physician leader as the next Alaska Family Medicine Residency (AFMR) Program Director in Anchorage, Alaska. AFMR is searching for a Program Director who will enhance the organization’s Residency Program with an unyielding commitment to medical education and a passion for full spectrum family medicine with a rural focus.

The residency prepares family doctors to work with underserved communities, with a particular goal to prepare and retain physicians to serve in rural Alaska.

Providence Alaska Medical Center (PAMC) was named the best hospital in Alaska in November 2021, and the residency continues to live daily in the Providence mission to serve all, especially those who are poor and vulnerable.

The AFMR program is part of Providence and comprises an integrated healthcare delivery network inclusive of Anchorage-based medical centers, an employed medical group, and a network of ambulatory care services. The residency and Providence Family Medicine Center (FMC) clinic is in Anchorage, on 36th Avenue, near PAMC.

AFMR has been serving the state for over 25 years, and graduates work in rural sites across the state. More than 90% of residency graduates go on to work in rural Alaska, work for a tribal health system, or work with an underserved urban or rural population. To strive to meet the mission, the current training program is rigorous with an emphasis on inpatient adult and pediatric medicine, obstetrics, rural practice, and broad-spectrum outpatient care. Anchorage is one of the most diverse populations in the United States and over 100 languages represented in our local schools. The FMC patient population reflects this diversity and is honored to be one of two outpatient centers in Anchorage to work with the underserved and vulnerable. FMC is proud to provide the welcome screening medical exams for any refugees or asylees who relocate to the State of Alaska. FMC welcomed over 50 refugees from Afghanistan last year and will welcome 200 more in the coming year.

AFMR has 12 residents per class. The first-year residents spend most of their training at PAMC on inpatient services and in outpatient PFMC, with one month of training in an ER in Anchorage, Fairbanks, or Soldotna. In the second year, residents go for 6 weeks to either Bethel or Dillingham to work in a critical access hospital. They rotate for 4 weeks in the PAMC ICU and begin supervising interns on inpatient rotations. The third-year residents lead the inpatient medicine team, rotate through a month of ER training at PAMC, and have 8 weeks of rural rotations. AFMR is under the leadership of Providence Medical Group (PMG) and as such the Program Director reports to the CEO of PMG and the Designated Institutional Official of PAMC. The Program Director is responsible for the oversight and direct supervision of the AFMR. The Program Director will participate in leadership meetings with PMG and the hospital. Additionally, the Program Director will also serve on the PAMC Graduate Medical Education Committee (GMEC).

The Program Director must be an experienced and knowledgeable leader who can lead the Program in developing a strategy and vision for the future. This influential leader must have the skills to continually develop the faculty and to assure alignment with the AFMR mission to serve the local and state community.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The successful Family Medicine Residency Program Director candidate will:

  • Demonstrate professional leadership incorporating the institution's mission, vision, and values in the Family Medicine Residency Program. Works collaboratively with all GME directors to meet program goals and use resources efficiently and effectively.

  • Prepare for accreditation reviews by ACGME and assure graduates are eligible for ABFM certification. Attend and report to GMEC.

  • Conduct faculty recruitment, retention, development, and evaluation. Supervise and mentor the faculty and staff to assure fulfillment of program objectives.

  • Collaborate with leadership to develop and manage capital and operating budget, including availability of adequate resources and necessary professional, technical and clerical personnel, for the effective administration of the program.

  • Serve as a member of the Providence Medical Group Executive Leadership Team.

  • In collaboration with PMG leadership, engage in action-planning to facilitate achievement of medical group operating goals.

  • Provide oversight of research and QI projects and develop quality indicators and evaluation of performance for the program's quality improvement activities.

  • Maintain affiliations of the program overseeing related contracts and agreements. Positively represent the program and institution in the Family Medicine Residency Network and other professional settings.

  • Direct effective curriculum and evaluation processes to ensure trainees receive appropriate teaching, clinic and rotation experiences, and advancement. Provide continuing educational updates to trainees, professional and support staff to maintain compliance with requirements and regulations.

  • Conduct faculty clinical practice, precept, and maintain and demonstrate clinical expertise. Develop training and implement individual and system improvements identified through patient case reviews.

  • Work closely with nursing and staff concerning family medicine residency patient management. Participate in problem-solving and conflict resolution with clinic and medical staff.

  • Function as a physician role model for family-oriented, continuous, and comprehensive care in the clinic, hospital, and other community settings.

  • Direct the planning, implementation, and evaluation of all medical and administrative activities of the Alaska Family Medicine Residency. Guide strategic planning for the ongoing development of the program. Direct faculty meetings and participate in staff meetings.

  • Participate in GME meetings and related medical staff department meetings or service area board meetings impacting the residency training program. Strive continuously to support and integrate the institution's strategic and residency program goals, improve, and enhance patient services and satisfaction while optimizing clinic productivity and operations providing an outstanding residency training environment.

  • Maximize productivity of preceptors, faculty, and residents by coaching to optimize their efficiency.

  • Effectively monitor and make decisions regarding the daily clinical activities of the residents by providing oversight of requests for leave, formal evaluations of residents, patient care, coordination of rotations and recruitment.

  • Produce reports and keep appropriate statistics regarding number of patients seen, education/training tracking, etc., that meet ACGME standards, adjusting practice as necessary.

  • Certify resident graduate qualifications to outside agencies. Oversee preparation and

  • maintenance of appropriate records and reports.

  • Adhere to established company compliance, policies, procedures, and protocols.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Reporting Relationships

The Family Medicine Program Director (Program Director) is accountable to the Providence Medical Group (PMG) Chief Executive, Tamara Brown and to the Providence Alaska Medical Center Designated Institutional Official (DIO), Dr. Kim Thomas for the performance of the Residency and Clinic. The PMG CE will conduct an annual evaluation of the Program Director's performance and accomplishments.

IDEAL QUALIFICATIONS

Education/Certification

  • Doctor of Medicine (M.D. or D.O.) from an accredited school of medicine with a strong record as a respected clinician.

  • Board Certification in Family Medicine required.

  • Board Eligibility or Certification in Family Medicine Obstetrics highly desired.

  • Advanced graduate degree (i.e., MPH, MBA, MHA) desired.

  • Eligibility for licensure in Alaska is required.

The successful candidate will be uniquely prepared for this role through professional experiences and leadership skills:

  • Minimum of 3 years faculty teaching experience with Family Medicine Residency required; leadership experience serving in assistant/associate or program director role preferred.

  • Must demonstrate interest, commitment, and leadership in education with excellent communication skills, as well serving as an exceptional clinical and professional role model.
