Providence is calling a Registered Nurse (RN) Forensic Nurse Examiner (Forensic Nursing Services Of Providence, Per Diem, Variable Shift) to Providence Alaska Medical Center in Anchorage, Alaska. In this position, you will:
Respond as appropriate to patients reporting a history of interpersonal violence in conjunction with team members from law enforcement and advocacy agencies
Complete a medical history with patients to obtain a bio/psycho/social/spiritual history, including a history of the events leading up to reporting for care while implementing care/services that recognize age/diversity specific needs/issues of customers served
Perform the medical-forensic exam utilizing department policies, procedures, protocols and guidelines
Procedure and treatment will be performed according to accepted department standards approved by the Medical Director and Clinical Nurse Manager
Follow the Centers for Disease Control Sexually Transmitted Disease Guidelines, department policies/procedures/guidelines/protocols, and the Ethical and Religious Directives for Catholic Health Care Services for the provision of counseling and instruction for emergency contraception and STI prevention and screening
Perform lab testing for patients based on the medical-forensic history provided by the patient. This may include collection of samples necessary to screen for sexually transmitted infections (STI), pregnancy, and drug/alcohol toxicology
Follow the department policies/procedures/guidelines/protocols, and the State of Alaska mandatory reporting requirements and notifications of reportable positive STI’s
Collect samples, while maintaining chain of custody, from the patient’s body, clothing, or belongings as indicated by the medical-forensic history utilizing the State of Alaska Sexual Assault Evidence Collection Kit
Document the episode of care in the patient’s medical-forensic record Documentation generally includes the use of written, diagrammatic, and photographic means
Provide patient education regarding the findings of the exam along with diagnosis, necessary treatment, and referrals for on-going care
Develop the discharge plan of care with the patient and team members to include safety planning while also ensuring that the medical and legal needs of the patient are being met
Communicate with team members the overall findings of the medical-forensic exam
Perform follow-up exams as determined by patient needs and department policies/procedures/guidelines/protocols
Provide accurate, evidence-based testimony, fact or expert, in court regarding forensic nursing practice, the episode(s) of care, and the medical-forensic exam findings
Maintain clinical contact with patients including notifying patients of laboratory results, follow-up appointments, maintaining charts and records, and responding to patient telephone calls
Participate in ongoing case review, peer review and quality assurance
Present educational/informational materials to professional/public audiences as needed
Observe all local and State of Alaska legal requirements related to mandatory reporting for health care providers
Participate in review and revision of clinic policies, procedures, protocols, guidelines, quality assurance requirements, exposure control and clinical laboratory procedures
Regularly attend department staff meetings and continuing education activities
Regularly submit a schedule of availability to the department manager or designee in accordance with the collective bargaining agreement. Submit a schedule of unavailability as well to aide in planning for department on-call planning and for responding to requests for testimony or interviews with members of the criminal justice system
FNE Complete initial and annual Competency Plan for assigned job and department, including mandatory unit required competencies
Required qualifications for this position include:
Nursing degree/diploma required upon hire
Bachelor's degree in Nursing or higher within 3 years of hire
An RN with 20 years of RN experience will not be required to obtain a BSN
Exceptions will be considered on a case-by-case basis at each facility by the most senior administrative nursing leader in consultation with the Human Resources leader
RNs employed prior to 1/1/17 are encouraged to obtain a Bachelor's degree or higher degree in Nursing, but obtaining the degree will not be a condition of employment
Licensed as a Registered Nurse in the State of Alaska
Competency Training Required: BLS
1 year Registered Nurse experience
Preferred qualifications for this position include:
Bachelor's degree in Nursing upon hire
Current certification of completion of 40 hours Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) training
16 hours SANE Clinical Skills Lab
