Providence Systems Administrator PHP in Beaverton, Oregon


*We are currently offering remote work from one of these states - Oregon (OR) and or Southwest Washington (WA)*

Providence is seeking a Systems Administrator PHP who will:

  • Perform a variety of technical administration, development, and support functions for Information Services.

  • Work with customers, vendors, consultants and other Information Services staff in performing their duties.

  • Provide On-call support.

  • Have these responsibilities span the Providence Health System facilities throughout the Oregon region.

  • Be expected to assist PHS IS employees in other service areas.

In this position you will have the following responsibilities:


  • Works closely with customers and IS staff to design and document the functional requirements and technical specifications for systems.

  • Seeks understanding of business function of applications and sound technical options.

  • Participates in cross-functional teams and committees within IS.


  • Demonstrates ability to prioritize assigned work, report progress and escalate issues.

  • Demonstrates ability in managing sub tasks of technical projects.

  • Demonstrates ability to take initiative in addressing and solving procedural, functional, communications, and technical related issues.

  • Participates in the coordination and scheduling of systems implementation and maintenance.

  • Works in conjunction with other IS teams and vendors in evaluating and defining system level monitoring requirements and resolving hardware and software performance problems.

  • Maintains up-to-date system configuration documentation. Assists with ensuring systems are within vendor support contracts and are configured such that they can be supported by the vendor.

  • Analyzes, resolves and follows up on technology problems.

  • Maintains system security according to regional policies and procedures.


  • Understands procedures and workflow of customer applications. Provides timely communication of downtimes, application problems, and facilitates resolution in technical areas.

  • Understands Providence Health System business as demonstrated by:

  • Reviewing PHS organizational chart and services provided.

  • Reviewing PHS IS strategic plan.

  • Reviewing IS organizational chart.

  • Develops understanding of how external customers use supported systems and the requirements and restrictions this puts on technical activities as demonstrated by:

  • Reviewing establish communication and coordination procedures when participating in maintenance activities.

  • Learning the business needs that drive system designs and changes.

  • Considering business needs when responding to system issues.

  • Stays abreast of developing PHS business directions by:

  • Attending quarterly IS staff meetings.

  • Reading published minutes of IS management meetings.

  • Experience in the use of desktop software such as Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, and MS Access is preferred.

SPECIFIC TYPES OF RESPONSIBILITIES (principal essential duties):

Level 1

  • Responsible of setting up and monitoring user accounts.

  • Responsible for 7x24 on-call support based on rotation within team.

  • Tunes, configures and upgrades the operating systems.

  • Ensures that nightly and weekly backups occur successfully and is responsible for recovering data as needed.

  • Acknowledges system problems, researches resolution be referring to established guidelines and/or team members, assist in completing problem resolution, updates trouble ticket within Remedy.

Job Specific Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:


  • Demonstrated ability to program in at least one applicable programming environment.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of commands and principles for applicable workstation and server operating systems.

  • Demonstrated ability to perform systems analysis in support of design efforts by team.

  • Works as a team member in documenting the functional requirements and technical specifications for new applications.

  • Analyzes performance and operational impact of new systems and changes to existing systems.

  • Works in conjunction with other IS teams and vendors to identify and resolve technical issues.

  • Tests and documents system changes in area of technical specialization.

  • Conducts integrated system testing of all system functions and interfaces.

  • Analyzes and configures appropriate system parameters as needed for supporting the production systems.

  • Stays abreast of developing technologies and standards.


  • Participates in written communication by:

  • Maintaining up-to-date system configuration documentation.

  • Timely and accurate status reporting & email.

  • Maintenance of internal training materials for supported areas.

  • Producing effective problem reports and assessments to aid in resolution.

  • Demonstrates effective verbal communications by:

  • Timely and accurate status reporting on evolving situations, problems and solutions.

  • Using language and technical details appropriate for audience.

  • Timely response to voice mail messages.

  • Demonstrates positive interpersonal skills by:

  • Effectively working with others to identify, analyze, and resolve technical and procedural issues.

  • Sharing ideas openly and carefully considering the input of others.

Required qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree: Participatory Level 1: Plus 2 years experience in a related technical field -or-

  • Associate's Degree: Participatory Level 1: Plus 4 years experience in a related technical field -or- Participatory Level 1: 6 years industry related technical experience

  • 2 years experience in related field as defined in the technical skills section below
