Providence Health & Services Clinical Documentation Integrity Educator in Burbank, California
Providence St. Joseph Health is calling a Clinical Documentation Integrity Educator (Full-Time, Days) to our location in Burbank, CA.
We are seeking a Clinical Documentation Integrity Educator who will assist the CDS team in meeting revenue, quality, and productivity goals and objectives by identifying opportunities for continuous quality improvement and knowledge advancement. Involved with testing and education on system upgrades and new system implementations. Conducts regular reviews to identify educational opportunities within the CDI team and providers to ensure consistency and compliance with state and national standards. The CDI Educator will deploy the education curriculum designed by the center of excellence.
The CDI Educator is involved in improving CDI core workflow standardization, performance, productivity, and innovations across the inpatient setting that support documentation across the continuum of care. The CDS is responsible for supporting and facilitating the overall quality improvement process of medical record documentation by educating CDI staff and physicians thru improved process and feedback to accurately reflect patient care in the medical record. This position has the ability to resolve high complexity issues, acts as a subject matter expert (SME) and demonstrates leadership through education, coaching and mentoring for CDI staff and physicians.
In this position you will have the following responsibilities:
Responsible for delivery of the clinical documentation education program for providers and clinical staff.
Assists individual and group education sessions on documentation improvement initiatives to department chairs, providers, and other clinical staff. Assists with new provider onboarding sessions to provide education and training resources related to Inpatient CDI as needed.
Acts in the capacity of a clinical documentation specialist as business needs dictate.
Acts as a SME for clinical documentation content and guidelines.
Provides process development or leads implementation of multiple cross-functional improvement efforts.
Demonstrates leadership through education, coaching and mentoring for CDI staff and physicians.
Orients and trains new hire CDS and/or Physicians, creates educational materials, and identify learning needs for multidisciplinary staff.
Ensures that staff are in compliance with enterprise standards and adhering to policy; Regularly communicates education program’s performance, gaps, opportunities, and progress.
Educates CDS and Providers on identified knowledge gaps, at‐risk DRGs, etc.; Delivers targeted education material and provides on‐site or remote education as appropriate.
Performs internal audits to ascertain where stronger education is needed.
Stays updated on CDI-related literature, participates in work groups, serves as mentor to CDI staff, and analyzes data to identify potential process improvement opportunities.

Reviews coded documentation to ensure proper code assignment and send through proper billing process timely to avoid any delays in DNFC/DNFB.

Maintains and applies up-to date knowledge of current clinical documentation practices to ensure the medical record accurately reflects patient care and ensures proper coding including MS-DRG, APR-DRG, ICD-10, CPT and HCPCS codes
Knowledge and support of performance metrics for compliance and workflow optimization across CDI operations. Embraces achieving best practices efficiently.
Understands the broader impact of work efforts across the revenue cycle function, critical business processes, and applications. Conceptualizes impact of changes upon workflow and best practices.
Provides ongoing education to the CDS team and/or physicians on documentation guidelines, regulations, and chart review functions in order to meet and maintain organizational goals and objectives, regulatory compliance, policies and procedures, and personnel management.
Serves as expert resource to clinical documentation specialists, coders, providers, revenue cycle, and other specialty groups and meetings.
Researches coding updates, new procedures, and disease pathophysiology and documentation requirements.
Provide presentation/educational materials (recognized resources) to CDI, Physicians, and Coding staff.
Promotes compliance with CMS, Medicare documentation, third party payers, coding, and billing regulations.
Acts as super user for all CDI related systems necessary for complete an accurate documentation. Updates policies and procedures for those areas of responsibility. In-services appropriate staff regarding changes in these areas.
Works closely with the CDI staff to identify areas of non-specific documentation and improve documentation and query templates to support accurate and complete documentation.
Required qualifications for this position include:
8 years experience as PA, RN or Foreign Medical Graduate with CDI experience in a multi-hospital integrated delivery network health system.
1 year ICD-10 experience and/or understanding.
1 year experience in understanding of MS-DRG and APR-DRG assignment and fundamentals of establishing a DRG.
Preferred qualifications for this position include:
Bachelor of Science in Nursing or a Bachelor of Science degree in healthcare, education or other related field (Foreign Medical Graduate).
5 years clinical experience in an acute care setting.
2 years experience with EPIC, Meditech, Iodine, JATA Guide, 3M 360 or similar applications.
2 years knowledgebase of current technological trends and developments in healthcare.
