THE ROLE

The Chief Executive of Providence-Humboldt County will provide vision, leadership, direction, and administration for all aspects of hospital/regional operations. They will direct the health care ministry with the objective of responsible stewardship to ensure sound operating margins and return on invested capital, establishing objectives, plans and policies subject to Board approval.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The Chief Executive for Providence–Humboldt County will:

  • Work with hospital, Board of Trustees, and System leadership to promote understanding, communication, and integration of SJH mission, vision, and values, while building a compelling vision for entity/region.

  • Lead entity efforts in execution of SJH strategic goals as defined by local and or/regional goals and initiatives while recognizing the larger context of health system challenges and needs and leading entity/region in support of common goals. Report regularly to the Board on all aspects of hospital operations including achievement of strategic goals.

  • Establish and collaboratively lead systems and controls to achieve effective, efficient operations, information and support, recruitment and retention of staff, and conservation of physical and financial assets.

  • Work collaboratively with physicians and medical groups to develop mutually beneficial relationships that support local and/or regional initiatives while assisting medical staffs to adapt and embrace marketplace changes.

  • Build accountability around ongoing quality and service strategies for clinical effectiveness and high-quality patient care.

  • Create a culture of continuous growth and improvement, to enhance the focus on service and quality improvement, and to meet compliance and safety standards.

  • Lead and be accountable for efforts around customer satisfaction (physician, employee, community, and patient), developing, supporting, continuously measuring, and improving programs to generate and sustain high levels of satisfaction by all groups.

  • Serve as a senior leader, ensuring the delivery of compassionate and high-quality patient care through continual assessment and management of programs, systems, processes, resources, and outcomes, establishing lines of authority for planning, management, operations, and evaluation at every service level, within the context of Providence-HC strategic mission and vision, to meet the needs of patients.

  • Ensure the achievement of financial targets while actively seeking revenue enhancement and/or cost-reduction strategies, balancing mission, and financial performance.

  • Provide for hospital compliance with applicable law and regulation and oversee the review and prompt response to reports and recommendations from planning, regulatory and inspecting agencies.

  • Create healthy communities and promote health improvement through proactively pursuing relationships and collaborating in efforts to improve the quality of life in the local community.

  • Identify opportunities, market needs, and industry trends while maintaining flexibility to proactively respond to shifting opportunities and threats, coordinating efforts within applicable local/regional strategy.

  • Maximize talent by providing counsel, leadership, guidance, and direction and assist in the development of an organizational culture appropriate to support the mission of Providence. Develop, coach, and mentor executive team in appropriate manner for individual and group needs to fulfill leadership roles and responsibilities while driving for results and fulfilling applicable entity and System succession strategies.

  • Possess a personal presence that is characterized by a sense of honesty, integrity, and caring, with the ability to inspire and motivate others to promote the philosophy, mission, vision, goals, and values of Providence.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • 10+ years of progressive senior executive leadership experience in large, complex, and matrixed integrated health systems

  • Knowledge of California regulatory requirements preferred

  • Track record of strengthening operational and financial performance

  • Significant P&L responsibility

  • Achievement of top-notch results in clinical quality, safety, and patient experience

  • As measured by external ratings or other recognition

  • Experience developing a unified organizational culture, cohesive senior management team and engaged staff

  • Track record of physician recruitment, engagement, and retention

  • Experience with rural healthcare or critical access hospitals

  • Involvement in community relations

  • Serving as the external face of the organization; developing relationships with business and community leaders; and enlisting their support in philanthropy

  • Catholic healthcare experience

  • Philanthropic fundraising experience

  • Experience in unionized environments

  • Bachelor’s degree in business, Health Care Administration, Nursing, or related field

  • Master’s degree in health or hospital administration, business administration or related field strongly preferred; Medical degree preferred.
