We are seeking a Patient Care Technician - Hemodialysis that will initiate monitors and discontinues dialysis treatments under the direct supervision of an RN. The technician also performs equipment disinfection dialyzer reprocessing and other technical duties which support the clinical care of the dialysis patient.

In this position you will have the following responsibilities:

  • Assist patients to enter and leave dialysis treatment area and/or facility safely

  • Assist patients in transferring from wheelchair to treatment chair, pre-treatment, and from treatment chair to wheelchair after treatment

  • Assist patients in transferring from stretcher to bed/and bed to stretcher

  • Initiate, monitor and discontinue dialysis treatments safely in order to achieve desired patient outcomes

  • Perform machine/dialyzer safety checks before each treatment

  • Assure patient’s weight is correct before beginning treatment

  • Take and record patient’s vital signs before, during and after treatment

  • Report patient signs/symptoms that require an RN’s intervention according to Standards of Care

  • Monitor correct machine functioning, troubleshoots as necessary and/or reports mechanical problems expediently

  • Accurately take blood pressures, heart rate and respiratory rate. Monitors I & O. Reports variation to RN according to Standards of Care

  • Dialyze patients safely according to policy/procedure

  • Administer normal saline as needed to maintain weight/BP per Standard of Care or procedure

  • Perform necessary technical support services in order to facilitate an efficient flow of daily treatments

  • Set up and primes dialyzers before treatments

  • Do simple troubleshooting

  • Tear down and cleans machines after treatments

  • Clean patient chairs between treatments

  • Prepare supplies needed to initiate and discontinue dialysis

  • Stock patient care area as needed

  • Assist changing out dialyzer and lines in the event of a clotted extracorporeal system

  • Assist cleaning up water spills expediently in order to prevent staff/patient falls

  • Reprocess dialyzer per unit policy/procedure

  • Disinfect R/O and dialysis machines per unit policy/procedure

  • Report patient care observations to the RN in order to facilitate the comprehensive care of the patient

  • Accurately documents all care provided

  • Contribute to the care planning process by sharing observations regarding patients

  • Skillfully accesses the patient graft, fistula or central line in order to prolong the life of the access

  • Use aseptic technique correctly performs venipunctures causing minimal patient discomfort

  • Recognize and report signs of a clotted access

  • Recognize and report signs of infected access

  • Use sterile technique correctly, access central line for dialysis treatment and changes dressing per unit policy/procedure


Required qualifications for this position includes:

  • Complete competency training and demonstrate successful performance of competencies within three (3) months of hire (Competencies are described in the Core Curriculum for the Dialysis Technician)

  • State certified and maintain certification by meeting recertification requirements as required by state

Preferred qualifications for this position includes:

  • Post-secondary education with courses in the sciences and/or psychology

  • One (1) year of Patient care experience, for example: inpatient transportation, CNA paramedical training, phlebotomy, physical therapy, surgery technician
