Providence is calling a Certified Nursing Assistant 2/Health Unit Coordinator (CNA 2 / HUC) to its Outpatient Transfusion Clinic at Providence Medford Medical Center in Medford, OR. This is a full-time position offering a 40 hour work week each week. The work schedule is Monday-Friday from 8am-5pm (no weekends). In this role a large amount of the work to be performed is clerical. About 80% of your shift will consist of desk work as a HUC, and the other 20% will include patient care as a CNA2. We are seeking a Certified Nursing Assistant 2 - Health Unit Coordinator - Outpatient Transfusion who will be a key person within the decentralized nursing unit, who provides overall administrative and technical support in the operation of the unit; collaborate with other staff and leaders in the development, oversight, and operation of the unit; and perform CNA II patient care duties.
In this position you will have the following responsibilities:
Monitor tube system for arrival of medications from Pharmacy and transport them to the defined area for medication storage on the unit
Assemble admission packets; ensure open charts at alcoves have adequate supply of forms; photocopies and faxes relevant documents for patient discharge
File materials as requested in patient charts at alcoves (e.g., care plans, lab reports, etc.) according to established timeframes and procedures
Transcribe provider orders in an accurate and timely manner at alcoves and/or substations
Perform data and order entry for patient treatments, diagnostics and related ancillary services
Enter unit charges into the computer and checks accuracy and completeness
Access and utilize the computer system as necessary for patient care documentation, physician order transcription, diet changes, equipment and supply ordering
Maintain multiple work areas in neat and organized manner
Provide primary telephone coverage for unit, with assistance from other staff as needed
Answer calls promptly and courteously; receive and distribute messages and information accurately and in a timely manner
Represent the unit in a positive light through respectful and compassionate interactions with patients, visitors, providers, and other departments
Monitor activity on unit to ensure no unauthorized personnel are present; notify Assistant Head Nurse/Charge Nurse or supervisor for intervention as needed
Maintain positive, 'can-do' demeanor when interacting with others; uses effective communication skills and manages conflict in a professional manner
Participate in all mandatory staff meetings, education, orientation and other meetings as assigned/requested
Collaborate with the charge nurse in the coordination of admissions, transfers, and discharges
Assess unit activity flow and prioritize workload appropriately, making use of the OR tracker and bed board computer systems
Participate in QI activities; maintain refrigerator logs; participate in patient rounding as directed by nurses
Complete work in a timely manner, requesting help when necessary and assisting co-workers as needed
Respond promptly and compassionately to patient needs communicated via the intercom and Vocera systems
Assess situation and prioritize based on severity, If unable to address need of patient, promptly relays needs to the patient's nurse
Report observations and information regarding patient condition to the RN in a timely manner
Answer patient call lights on all patients and attends to patient needs as appropriate
Administer hygienic care to the patient, including bathing, oral and denture care, shaving, combing hair, etc.
Assist with patient activity and mobilization
Participate in admission, transfers, pre-and post-op and post-mortem care as directed by the nurse
Provide direct patient care under the supervision of the RN, including but not limited to, calculation of patient intake and output, application of cardiac monitor leads, performing point of care testing, and assisting with patient respiratory care
Required qualifications for this position includes:
Coursework/Training: Health Unit Coordinator or secretarial coursework along with a medical terminology course or experience -OR- one (1) year experience performing secretarial duties in a health care environment.
Coursework/Training: Completion of Oregon State Board of Nursing (OSBN) recognized Acute Care CNA 2 course -OR- Grandfathered to CNA 2 per OSBN requirements
Active and unencumbered license in the state of Oregon as Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA)
Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
Experience with a variety of software applications
Preferred qualifications for this position include:
One (1) year of acute care hospital experience, ideally performing CNA and/or Health Unit Coordinator duties
One (1) year of experience as a CNA 2
