We are seeking a Assistant Nurse Manager who will be responsible for assisting the Nurse Manager in planning, organizing, directing, and evaluating services of the unit. It is expected that the ANM manages and coordinates the unit, directs and supervises functions and activities, interprets policies/procedures/protocols, standards, and regulations as appropriate. ANMs scope of responsibility spans all aspects of nursing care. The ANM maintains clinical competence and certifications to assist the unit when required.

In this position you will:

  • Maintain responsibility for the management and staffing of the unit for the assigned shift

  • Expected to respond to concerns from caregivers related to staffing, scheduling, and any other unit concerns

  • Assume direct reporting responsibility for assigned department/unit staff members and is responsible for evaluating work performance, coaching and counseling of employees, and making recommendations for personnel actions

  • Independently investigates employee alleged misconduct and makes recommendations regarding discipline including discharge

  • Involve manager/director Human Resources when appropriate

  • Manage staff productivity and makes adjustments in a timely manner to ensure effective stewardship and patient safety

  • Staff Management: Prepares work schedules, assigns personnel and adjusts schedule and assignments as appropriate with shared governance principles at the forefront of decision making

  • Participate in the selection, training, and orientation of unit personnel

  • Supervise care provided by staff members by maintaining high visibility to patients/families and staff in the clinical area(s)

  • Implement and maintains established department, unit, and hospital policies, procedures, and objectives including safety, environmental and infection control domains

  • Participate in organizational performance improvement programs (Lean principles and Six Sigma)

  • Prepare written documentation as required by the profession and the department

  • Consult with nursing administration concerning management of assigned units and all related matters

  • Follow-up on staff compliance for annual competencies, required education, and employee health requirements and ensure these requirements are enforced in a timely manner

  • Ensure accurate maintenance of patients' medical records and that patient records are treated as confidential information

  • Assist in establishing and implementing unit goals and objectives

  • Organize, direct, and coordinate functions and activities in specialty area

  • Ensure that nursing standards and practices are developed and met

  • Establish and maintain communication between the nursing unit and ancillary departments for the purpose of problem solving

  • Utilize appropriate lines of communication within the nursing department

  • Maintain all records pertaining to the staff competency and quality audits and other related records

  • Maintain awareness of ongoing quality improvement studies within the unit, assists with implementation of corrective action determined necessary

  • Inspect area daily for compliance with policies, procedures, regulations, and standards and takes corrective action when violations occur

  • Maintain a safe, comfortable and therapeutic environment for patients/families that allows for the delivery of high quality patient care in accordance with hospital standards

  • Assist attending physicians, patients, and families as needed in times of stress or crisis

  • Provide direction to nursing concerning patient care, evaluates outcomes, consults with other specialists as required and adjusts nursing care processes as indicated to ensure optimal patient care

  • Enhance professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, current literature, in-service meetings, and workshops

  • Direct maintenance of department facilities, equipment, supplies and materials in a condition to promote efficiency, health, comfort and safety of patients and staff

  • Requisition supplies and equipment, maintenance and repair services, and prepares related forms. Keeps stock and equipment inventories

  • Serve as a professional role model, coach and resource for employees

  • Participate actively in Nursing, Shared Governance, and/or hospital committees and work groups

  • Attend meetings as required, and participates on committees as directed

  • Assist in investigating complaints of patients, nursing staff, and medical staff, and takes appropriate action; follows up to ensure that complaints have been satisfactorily handled. Interviews staff to ensure accuracy of documentation

  • Manage employee electronic timekeeping record and approves as required

  • Support the budget development process as needed

  • Activate the chain of command when addressing patient, staff, or department concerns

  • Evaluate patient outcomes, consults with other inter-professionals as required and adjusts nursing care processes as indicated to ensure optimal patient care

  • Seek opportunities for applying Evidence Based Practice and potential Nursing Research

Qualifications:

Required qualifications for this position includes:

  • Bachelor's Degree/Master’s Degree in Nursing

  • Current California Registered Nurse License

  • Basic Life Support (BLS)

  • Los Angeles City Fire Card within 30 days from date of hire

  • Three (3) years of recent clinical experience in an acute care hospital in their specialty area

  • One (1) year of Charge Nurse/Relief Charge Nurse experience

  • Highly effective interpersonal and communication skills

  • Proven leadership ability and hospital operational expertise

  • Mentoring/coaching ability

  • Able to serve as a role model and advocate for the professional discipline of nursing

  • Strong knowledge base or experience in specialty areas assigned

Preferred qualifications for this position includes:

  • American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) recognized Specialty certification

  • Leadership experience

  • Shared Governance experience

  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite products and electronic communication
