We are seeking a Emergency Department Technician under the general supervision of the Emergency Department Nurse Manager, Assistant Nurse Manager, or Resource Nurse, who will perform basic emergency medical/trauma procedures and patient care as directed. Demonstrate proficiency in delivering care to assigned age-specific patient population (e.g., infants, adolescents, adults, geriatrics, pediatrics), and participates in related continuing education.
The Emergency Service Technician will perform basic emergency medical/trauma procedures and patient care as directed under RN/MD supervision. The EST demonstrates proficiency in delivering care to assigned age-specific patient population (e.g., infants, adolescents, adults, geriatrics, pediatrics), and participates in related continuing education.
In this position you will:
Implement and maintain established department, unit, and hospital policies, procedures, and objectives as well as improving organization performance, patient/customer safety, environmental, and infection control policies. Cooperate with other personnel to achieve department objectives and maintain good employee relationships
Assist attending physicians, patients, and families as needed in times of stress or crisis
Maintain a safe, comfortable and therapeutic environment for patients/families in accordance with hospital standards
Perform basic nursing procedures for medical and trauma patients including: thermal applications, non-sterile soaks, application of simple dressings, perineal care, stool, and urine collection
Perform initial and updated vital signs, pulse oximetry, application of cardiac monitoring, and provide nursing staff with pain assessment and reassessment on medical/trauma patients
Clean and prepare rooms in between procedures and after terminal cleaning. Monitors and restocks room supplies
Responsible for cleaning and maintaining radio room and employee lounge
Responsible for cleaning and maintaining dirty utility room. Including setting up instrument soaking trays, facilitating the return of dirty food trays and backboards
Opens sterile supplies and sets up for and assists with medical and trauma procedures
Answer patient call lights and assist patient with their needs
Enter orders and arrange for patients' ordered diagnostic and therapeutic services when covering for unit clerks for breaks and/or sick calls/vacations
Admit patients and arrange emergency/trauma procedures and other services
Photocopy information, files information, answer the telephone, take messages, and direct calls
Ensure accurate maintenance of patients' medical records and that patient records are treated as confidential information.
Call in personnel replacements.
Orient, instruct, and train assigned personnel.
Requisitions supplies and equipment maintenance and repair services and prepare related forms. Keeps stock and equipment inventories
Assist nursing staff with clerical duties related to procedures such as admission, discharge, transfer, and death
Perform electrocardiograph examinations with portable equipment in patient rooms
Submit ECGs to physician for interpretation
Perform splinting of medical/trauma patients as directed by the physician
Prepare Aftercare Instructions, and retrieves appropriate teaching literature from Micromedex
Assist resource and triage nurse with patient flow and room assignments for patients being brought into the department by ambulance personnel
Facilitate patient flow in the Emergency Department by bringing patients into the ED after triage and placing them in a patient room based on their chief complaint for assessment by physician
Perform daily check list and crash cart check of rooms and equipment
Assist pastoral care with crisis intervention for families of trauma (medical patients as well as deaths)
Assist trauma team with nursing/ medical/ and life saving interventions during the care of trauma patients
When multiple trauma patients are in the department, floats between trauma patients to assist RN with tasks
Accompany and assist nursing personnel with trauma patients that arrive by helicopter
Transport patients to patient room and to testing areas (i.e., X-ray)
Assist RN with transport of critical and trauma patients to ICU/surgery and to procedures
Assist staff with post mortem care
Participate in educational programs and in-service meetings
Attend meetings as required
Qualifications:
Required qualifications for this position include:
Completion of EMT-1 Training program or Clinical experience
MOAB I / II within 30 to 150 days of hire
Current BLS-HCP- Basic Life Support- for Healthcare Providers- American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross (ARC)- CPR/AED for Professional Rescuer accepted on hire until card expiration date
Los Angeles County Fire Card required within 30 days of hire
EMT Certification: Current LA County EMT-1 Certificate
Good oral, written communication skills
Good organizational skills
Good physical assessment skills
Preferred qualifications for this position include:
National Registry of EMT certification
1 year patient care or clinical experience
Experience in an emergency room setting
