Providence Health & Services Nutrition Assistant - Food and Nutrition Services in Olympia, Washington


Providence is calling a Nutrition Assistant (0.0 FTE, Variable) to work in Food and Nutrition Services at Providence St. Peter Hospital in Olympia, WA.

The Nutrition Assistant will perform a variety of clerical/technical duties in support of patient nutrition. May orient patients to the Room Service program; receive meal orders and perform computer data entry; monitor patients' menu selections; and assemble and deliver orders. Must be able to take orders directly from the customer and read, interpret and expedite customer orders in an organized and timely manner. Must be able to work under the pressure and stringent time constraints and remain calm and organized. Direct customer service and contact with customers in the retail areas is required in this position.

In this position you will:

  • Instruct patients on meal ordering system following an established script. Assesses patients ability to utilize the meal order system and follow up with appropriate staff member if unable to participate:

  • Demonstrate knowledge of customer service skills, ability to communicate effectively with a wide variety of individuals

  • Service meals to patients in a professional and efficient manner

  • Deliver the correct menu ( menu compliant ) to the patient

  • Assist patients and or family members in placing the meal order

  • Participate in the process of gathering, delivering and storing food supplies to nursing units

  • Demonstrate knowledge of food safety, food handling, infection control and dietary restrictions

  • Demonstrate knowledge of body substance isolation procedures and biohazard material disposal

  • Order and replenish bulk supplies on nursing units.

  • Participate in the process of recording food and fluid intake for patient meals and snacks

  • Demonstrate ability to perform basic math skills, calculate percent of food intake and cubic centimeters of fluid intake and records on I /O record

  • Retrieve completed meals from patients rooms in a timely manner

  • Demonstrate knowledge of hospital layout and other departments

  • Deliver between meal nourishments directly to patients.

  • Demonstrate ability to work with patients, managers and clients of various ages’ groups

  • Consider patient, manager/client background and work history to effectuate positive work experience/relationship

  • Respond appropriately according to age related needs and considerations

  • Act as a liaison between food & nutrition department, the patient and nursing unit

  • Anticipate patient/ team member needs and services them

  • Serve as a quality assurance control point for every aspect of the room service program

  • Communicate with members of the other departments effectively and concisely regarding patient support, issues, requests and other special situations

  • Mediate patient concerns regarding meal service and advocates for patient regarding food service


Required qualifications for this position includes:

  • Food Service Worker’s permit (State board of Health Rules and Regulations, Chapter 197 Law of 1959 State of Washington)

  • Two (2) years of experience related to food preparation
