Providence Health & Services Phlebotomist I in Olympia, Washington

Providence is calling a Phlebotomist I (1.0 FTE/40 hours per week, Evening Shift) to work in the Phlebotomy at Providence St. Peter Hospital in Olympia, WA.

The Phlebotomist I will be responsible for clinical laboratory duties, including:

All Sites: Reception and Telephone duties & proficient operation laboratory equipment including HIS/LIS systems; specimen handling: receiving and processing; prep & shipping of lab specimens for at Reference Laboratories; specimen/patient registration; phlebotomy - collection of blood samples by venipuncture or capillary stick; therapeutic blood collection; swab collection of specific Micro samples (per competency); assignment to OP Lab locations; training new staff as assigned.

If assigned to a site where offered: Dispatch functions, EKG performance, collection of DOT and non-DOT drug screens, for cause drug screens (HR), and Breath Alcohol Testing (BAT); clinic relief fill-in

Communication Requirements: respectful and patient communications (written and verbal) with patients, clients, other lab staff, and caregivers from other departments.

In this position you will:

  • Facilitate communications and refers complex calls to appropriate staff

  • Respond appropriately according to age-related needs and considerations

  • Able to handle and process multiple specimen drops (i.e.) Courier Drops, Health Care Professional Drops, Tube Station Specimen Drops

  • Able to manage Pneumatic Tube Station and differentiate between STAT and Routine Drops

  • Able to handle multiple external specimen drops from various clinical locations

  • Able to register specimens/patient data in both the HIS and LIS systems with accuracy and timeliness

  • Able to deliver all specimens types to various clinical areas of Laboratory with accuracy and timeliness

  • Demonstrate knowledge of the unit’s testing procedures, systems and databases as necessary to the position

  • Take orders for laboratory tests. Performs patient processing, scheduling and billing in computer system

  • Obtain patient charts; checks, assembles, and files forms, documents, and other paperwork

  • Understanding of medical terminology and ability to enter information, identify errors, make corrections

  • Able to demonstrate attention to detail and organizational skills

  • Use personal computer, copiers, fax, and other standard office equipment

  • Enter data into computer database, performs computer job stream tasks, prints and distributes lists and reports

  • Perform EKG test procedures (where offered) and phlebotomy tasks, collects venous blood specimens from patient age groups, as certified

  • Demonstrate knowledge of and ability to perform phlebotomy/capillary puncture and blood draw per approved MA-Phlebotomist Certification Licensure Class

  • Obtain blood on 90% of the patients attempted

  • Operate laboratory equipment, needles, syringes, vacutainer, centrifuges etc., as assigned

  • Demonstrate a knowledge of and ability to process specimens, including basic centrifugation and aliquoting

  • Able to operate wheelchairs and stretchers, assist with patient mobility, utilizing knowledge of body mechanics and limitations

  • Conduct EKG test procedures where offered. Ability to instruct patients in exam procedures and assist them as needed. Accurately preforms EKG tests

  • Perform office/clerical tasks such as filing, copying, and typing

  • Demonstrate knowledge of basic computer skills necessary to operate PC and use common office software and office equipment

  • Demonstrate knowledge of filing systems and ability to file and retrieve a variety of documents

  • Data Storage of Send out Test Results

  • Clean and maintain equipment and keeps the laboratory area clean and orderly

  • Able to identify, use, and correctly handle and store equipment and supplies

  • Demonstrates knowledge of cleaning techniques and biohazard material disposal. Ability to perform cleaning tasks as needed

  • Perform QA/QC activities related to tasks

  • Participate in departmental QA activities through participation in laboratory QA plans, including: data collection, documentation, problem recognition, evaluation solutions and corrective actions

  • Readily reports or refers problems with policy interpretation, patient or personnel issues to supervisor

  • Maintain competency appropriate to assigned sections

  • Basic knowledge of the organizational structure and hospital departments

  • Knowledge of Laboratory functions, policies and procedures

  • Stay current with MediaLab review assignments

  • Maintain currency with hospital-mandated continuing education, & competency evaluations

  • Demonstrate knowledge of hospital and laboratory policies and procedures related to the work processes, documents, and records

  • Able to maintain own accurate and complete records for CE

  • Successfully completes required competency evaluations wiin required timelines (depending upon hire dates: 90-day, 6-month, annual)

  • Complete annual safety education training (Healthstream) & Integrity Training

  • Demonstrate knowledge of age/sex dependence of testing results, utilizing equipment and performing procedures. Neonate, Pediatric, Adolescent, Adult & Older Adult

  • Assess data/tools relative to age of patient

  • Interpret data based on age-specific parameters

  • Incorporate knowledge of growth and development into care when performing lab procedures, understanding of age-related distinctions and performs phlebotomy only on those patients’ age groups as certified

  • Identify role and responsibility in complying with facility and unit specific safety and security policies, plans and procedures

  • Able to state the evacuation routes in case of fires

  • Able to state fire plan and name location of fire information

  • Successfully completes periodic safety quizzes administered by lab’s Safety Officer

  • Identify potential or actual unsafe situations in patient or office environment, providing appropriate interventions to rectify situation

  • Address safety needs as part of the Laboratory Assistant role, communicating as appropriate, with all members of the healthcare team

  • Comply with facility and unit specific infection control, risk management and OSHA guidelines and procedures

  • Demonstrate ability to verbalize appropriate responses to various isolation precautions, as well as proper use of PPE

  • Attend annual facility and department education and training

  • Knowledge of standard precautions and related procedures, and biohazard material disposal

  • Demonstrate knowledge of transmission based (isolation) precautions related to infection control

  • Provide sensitivity with cultural and religious beliefs

  • Make allowance for cultural and religious beliefs when providing services

  • Adhere to facility and department confidentiality policies

  • Maintain confidentiality of business and/or patient related information

  • Demonstrate knowledge of confidentiality policies, applying knowledge in day to day practice

  • Demonstrate knowledge of established patient rights and responsibilities

  • Perform other duties as assigned

  • Follow guidelines at time of assignment, and prioritizes workload to ensure timely completion of assignment

Qualifications:

Required qualifications for this position include:

  • Completion of an approved phlebotomy or Medical Assistant Training program meeting requirement to become licensed as a MA-P or MA-C by WA State

  • Medical Assistant - Phlebotomist Certification (MA-P) or (MA-C)

Preferred qualification for this position includes:

  • Less than one (1) year experience as a phlebotomist and/or completion of a Phlebotomy program
