Providence Health & Services Senior Clinical Informatics Engineer: Health Information Exchange in Oregon

We are seeking a Senior Clinical Informatics Engineer who:

  • Acts as a key contributor to the team and provide technical insight and guidance to leadership

  • Turns business and technical requirements into a plan of action and help drive the team to deliver a successful outcome

  • Determines and organizes the engineering work required to achieve the desired outcome of the effort and work with the supervisors and team members to distribute the work appropriately

  • Is accountable for the success of efforts overall and works diligently to ensure all the engineering work required has been identified and assigned properly

  • Organizes and manages the engineering of large and long-term projects and initiatives by collaborating with architects and business teams to drive clarity and manage expectations

  • Successfully integrates the efforts of all teams within IS to effectively and efficiently produce the desired solution

  • Determines the scope of work for more junior team members which includes identifying, clarifying, and providing guidance on the efforts required

  • Acts as a key contributor to IS efforts and make a significant impact on the business and the IS organization

  • Serves as a leader in the effort to increase IS technical capabilities and quality while also helping lowering costs

  • Presents technical information, project status, and other information in team, department, or project status meetings

  • Will be responsible for sharing information through training and mentoring of others in the department

  • Uses analytical skills and expert-level skills in at least one area of technology

  • Has broad knowledge of technology and software development in addition to areas of expertise

  • Has excellent knowledge of architecture, systems level design principles, and distributed design and is capable of systems-level design and partitioning of designs into components

  • Has experience building solutions involving one or more of the major cloud service providers

  • Has intermediate to advanced programming skills in at least two languages

  • Has demonstrated experience working in an Agile development environment with geographically distributed teams

In this position you will have the following responsibilities:

  • Deliver design documents, software programs, scripts, configuration files, and other programming artifacts as needed to implement solutions

  • Provide training and mentoring to other team members on high-level design, implementation design, and coding skills and best practices

  • Provide leadership and technical management of solutioning efforts, including projects and initiatives

  • Ensure that all Engineering participants involved in such efforts have clarity of role and expectations in effort

  • Research and investigate new capabilities of cloud services and other technologies

  • Provide timely insight and advice to leadership team to permit the leveraging of these technologies in future plan

  • Assist in gathering, clarifying, and documenting requirements of solutions

  • Work collaboratively with architects and other engineers to determine potential gaps and alternative solutions

  • Ensure that all designs are aligned with the organization's standards and policies and that designs are reviewed properly

  • Ensure that code is reviewed properly for adherence to security policies and coding best practices

  • Provide assistance with troubleshooting issues escalated to engineering including on-call assistance for top priority incidents

Job Specific Knowledge Skills and Abilities:

  • Adept at architecture and design of business solutions in the enterprise or cloud environments

  • Strong knowledge of virtualization technologies, networking, and infrastructure and application security

  • Adept at programming in at least two languages such as Java, C#, C , Python, or Node.js

  • Experience with bash and PowerShell as well as familiarity with the command-line interface to at least one major cloud service, such as AWS, Azure, or Google

  • Strong focus on positive business outcomes

  • Comfortable collaborating using open communications across team boundaries

  • Solid knowledge of software and systems architecture and design

  • Understanding of SOLID and other code design principles

  • Demonstrated ability to manage code in a Git repository


Required qualifications for this position include:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or Information Systems or a combination of equivalent education/experience

  • 5 years of experience in software developer and IT automation

Preferred qualifications for this position include:

  • Master's Degree in Computer Science or Information Systems or a combination of equivalent education/experience

  • Certified Developer or Certified Architect of a major cloud service

  • 4 years of experience as a Agile team member or coordinator, such as Scrum Master

  • Familiarity with at least one of these interface standards: FHIR, HL7, IHE, SOAP, REST Web Services
