Providence Laboratory Assistant 3 in Portland, Oregon
Description:
Providence is calling a Laboratory Assistant 3 to work in the Clinical Laboratories located in our Oregon Hospitals.
(0.9 FTE, Rotating/Variable Shift, Premium Pay!)
We are seeking a Laboratory Assistant 3 who will be responsible for the accurate and timely receiving, processing, and labeling of laboratory specimens, and the appropriate handling and/or disbursement of laboratory data and patient results. Supports personnel work with acute-care and outpatient caregivers, vendors, consultants, and other Laboratory Services staff in performing their duty. Additionally, this position is responsible for registering outpatient laboratory encounters obtaining complex demographic, insurance, and medical information. Successful candidates will maintain up to date knowledge and competency on required registration functions.The Lab Assistant 3 utilize multiple computer applications in order to complete patient encounters.
In this position you will have the following responsibilities:
Laboratory Compliance:
Demonstrate competency in compliance by carrying out personal responsibilities required by the PH&S Laboratory Compliance Plan, including annual training.
Maintain knowledge of numerous complex dynamic compliance requirements.
Ensure compliance is met with various Federal, State and other regulatory bodies which includes, but is not limited to CMS, CAP, TJC, CLIA, EMTALA, COBRA and HIPPA.
Technical Skills:
Act as a resource for specimen collection and handling requirements, laboratory procedures and hospital protocols
Accurately perform advanced specimen processing functions, which may include: preparation of slides, stains, solutions; media and culture set up; pre-analytical instrument setup, opening/weighing human organs, assisting at autopsies, etc.
Perform and document scheduled and unscheduled maintenance on laboratory instrumentation as assigned
Accurately perform and document analytical procedures and patient testing as assigned according to state and federal regulations
Independently apply computer skills to access appropriate HIS/LIS information
Demonstrate enhanced experience in the use of lab-specific software and desktop software such as Word, Outlook, Excel, etc.
Independently identify and resolves progressively complex discrepancies and specimen integrity issues and is able to troubleshoot, resolve and document variances
Utilize all computer programs properly and effectively
Verify patient information (full legal name, spelling and date of birth) and accurately inputs all required information into the STAR Patient Care system assigning a medical record number using correct search procedures
Enter physician orders as appropriate for patient services
Document and accurately receives, processes and distributes specimens to assure proper preservation of sample and timely analysis and reporting of results
Exhibit excellent telephone etiquette and Service Excellence skills, utilizing key words at key times
Effectively instruct and trains new employees or students
Perform specimen collection
Quality Assessment:
Demonstrate the ability to promptly and accurately perform quality control procedures with appropriate documentation
Initiate and document corrective action when taken
Initiate written variances (including self-reporting) to ensure continuous quality improvement
Is able to identify, analyze and resolve complex technical and procedural variances
Provide succinct situations summaries of evolving situations, problems and solutions
Participate in department QA projects as requested or required
Ensure all quality control procedures are performed prior to patient testing as appropriate
Productivity:
Complete assigned tasks, meeting section turn-around-times
Work inter-departmentally and intra-departmentally to ensure laboratory goals are met
Knowledge Acquisition:
- Provide team members and other lab staff with verbal and written in-services pertinent to the work group
Business Knowledge:
Understand the principles of quality improvement, efficiency and Service Excellence
Understand and supports departmental goals
Respond to technical questions with accurate and complete information and refers questions appropriately
Adhere to departmental policies and procedures
Qualifications:
Required qualifications for this position includes:
High School Diploma -OR- General Education
Two (2) years college education -OR- Verifiable experience which includes proficiency in moderately complex testing
Three (3) years healthcare, -OR- related field experience including phlebotomy-related experience
Demonstrated outstanding Service Excellence experience
Clerical or client services experience
Demonstrated experience with State and Federal and other regulatory Compliance regulations including CMS (Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services), CAP, TJC (The Joint Commission), CLIA, EMTALA, COBRA and HIPPA.
In compliance with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) criminal background check and fingerprinting may be required for position
Preferred qualifications for this position includes:
Phlebotomy program with one (1) year of phlebotomy related experience -OR-
Certification from a Clinical Laboratory Assistant Program, -OR-
Three (3) years related experience
Courses in biological sciences, anatomy, and medical terminology
Certification in Phlebotomy, medical assisting, research, or clinical laboratory
Certification from an approved government agency or nationally recognized professional organization (ASCP, NCA, etc.)
Industry-related experience in a high volume, acute care setting
Two (2) years of phlebotomy, medical assisting, research, clinical laboratory experience
Job experience in specimen collection, specimen preparation and equipment operation, pneumatic tubes systems and other laboratory equipment
