We are seeking a Respiratory Equipment Technician - Respiratory Therapy that will be responsible for the effective cleaning, inspection, proper sterilization and setup and distribution of respiratory devices and equipment, including but not limited to noninvasive and invasive ventilators, high flow systems, pulse oximeters, medical gas tanks, etc. Assure that necessary supplies are available for use on respiratory equipment. Work collaboratively with other departments such as Biomed to stage, retrieve and locate equipment for repair, preventative maintenance and regional sharing. Perform EKGs as necessary and directed by Respiratory care team. Is knowledgeable in procedures for preparing equipment for patient use and serve as a patient safety advocate.

In this position you will have the following responsibilities:

  • Device Cleaning and Disinfection:

  • Anticipate and prioritize workload and coordinate with Respiratory Care staff

  • Assemble, disassemble, clean and prepare invasive and non-invasive ventilators, high flow oxygen systems, CPAP, pulse oximeters and other types of respiratory care equipment for patient use

  • Inspect equipment and test for proper function

  • Initiate repairs for any malfunctioning instrumentation

  • Select appropriate cleaning and disinfection method, and ensure adequate cleaning of all devices

  • Trouble shoots devices

  • Complete appropriate documentation

  • Device Assembly, Storage and Distribution:

  • Correctly identify and organize devices in preparation for assembly

  • Inspect devices to ensure proper cleaning and function

  • Take initiative to follow up on identified issues

  • Assemble devices according to pre-established guides

  • Ensure proper storage of devices, supplies, and equipment following established guidelines

  • Work with Biomed and utilize instrument tracking effectively to manage inventory

  • Support of clinical staff:

  • Prepare, deliver, and retrieve equipment to clinical areas as needed to support clinical respiratory care team

  • Maintain accurate, timely and legible documentation in the patient's medical record

  • Perform ECGs as assigned and maintain accurate, timely, and legible documentation in the patient's medical record

  • Work under the guidance and direction of respiratory care staff and leadership to ensure availability of devices and equipment used by the respiratory care team

  • Communicate with Respiratory shift leadership and staff to anticipate equipment needs

  • Respond promptly to requests of unanticipated case needs

  • Review and maintain adequate inventory of disposable supplies in the main department and in satellite areas where respiratory supplies are stored

  • Work with respiratory staff and local material management to assure adequate levels par-stocked items

  • Evaluate portable oxygen tank inventory in the RT department and communicate with Home Services and DME providers to assure appropriate supplies

  • Working with the RT Leads, assures adequate inventory of INO tanks and disposable supplies

  • Sterile Storage and Distribution:

  • Ensure proper sterile storage of instrumentation, supplies, and equipment following established guidelines

  • Utilize instrument tracking effectively to manage inventory

  • Handle sterile packages appropriately

  • Inspect sterile packages integrity prior to distribution

  • Review surgery schedule and anticipate instrumentation needs

  • Assemble case carts and review for completeness prior to distribution

  • Respond promptly to operating rooms for unanticipated case needs

  • Review and maintain adequate inventory

  • Assemble department specific kits in a restricted area that may include medication

  • Stewardship of Resources:

  • Care for patient care equipment throughout process

  • Organize and prioritize work assignments in an efficient and cost effective manner

  • Teamwork:

  • Demonstrate commitment to teamwork by contributing to meet department needs

  • Complete all assigned tasks and communicate to incoming shift

  • Coordinate activities with other members of the health care team

  • Share knowledge and expertise willingly

  • Conflict resolution:

  • Contribute to resolving conflict

  • Utilize problem solving skills to promote a positive work environment

  • Seek assistance to resolve conflict when needed

  • Give and receive constructive feedback

  • Understand the safety risks involved in the department work and remains alert to dangers

  • Is safety minded; always alert and mindful of ways to work in a manner that keeps self and others safe


Required qualifications for this position include:

  • High School Diploma -OR- GED

  • One (1) year of experience using personal computer and basic software programs

Preferred qualifications for this position include:

  • Coursework/Training: Enrollment in an accredited Respiratory Therapy education program -OR- previous patient care experience may be considered in-lieu-of course work/training/education

  • Three (3) months of acute care experience
