Providence Health & Services Scientist, Cancer Research in Portland, Oregon


Providence is calling a Scientist Cancer Research - Medical Research (1.0 FTE, Day) to Providence Portland Medical Center in Portland, OR.

We are seeking a Scientist Cancer Research - Medical Research who will be responsible for performing biomedical experiments for projects of limited scope or portions of larger research projects in pursuit of overall research goal or objective of the research laboratory. The Earle A. Chiles Research Institute (EACRI) at Providence Cancer Institute is recruiting a Scientist to support the development of new adoptive T-cell therapies for the treatment of patients with metastatic cancer.

The major role of this position is to oversee the scientific aspects in the development and manufacture of T cells in our Cell Production Facility that will be used to treat patients with cancer. This position involves extensive lab protocol and process development, including optimization of cell culture methods for generating T cells for patient treatment. Other major responsibilities include leading research projects related to the development of novel T-cell therapies using new gene engineering technologies, hands-on translational research, data analysis, and training and education. Experience with cellular therapies in a cGMP environment and a strong understanding of viral and nonviral based methods of T-cell gene engineering are major assets. Experience with common immunological techniques such as enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and flow cytometry are also major assets.

In addition you will have the following responsibilities:

  • Maintain and/or implement scientific plans and protocols to accomplish specific scientific objectives

  • Perform, document and report research results of complex biomedical experiments in support of research activities or specialized scientific laboratory

  • Implement methods, techniques, and evaluation criteria for solving problems

  • Develop new production methods, scientific techniques and assays

  • Summarize and interpret data; formal reporting of research results including presentations and/or publications

  • Pursue external grant support to conduct relevant research with demonstrable value to Providence Health System

  • Prepare and submit proposals for grant and contract funding

  • Cognizant of potentially hazardous chemical, biological, or radiological materials; use of personal protective equipment; and adherence to strict safety protocols


Required qualifications for this position includes:

  • Ph.D. in appropriate field

  • Two (2) years of Biomedical research experience

Preferred qualifications for this position includes:

  • Demonstrated publications in peer review journals

  • Able to maintain flexible hours
