Providence is calling a Lead Clinical Laboratory Scientist (Full-time/Evening shift) to Providence Tarzana Medical Center in Tarzana, CA.

We are seeking a Lead Clinical Laboratory Scientist who will be reporting to the General Laboratory Supervisor, this position is responsible for performing superior customer satisfaction, ensuring the highest quality care and service. Performs a wide range of procedures including procedures of high complexity in at least three laboratory sections where one of the sections is blood bank/transfusion services.

In this position you will:


  • Promote patient, physician, customer and employee satisfaction by personal example, treating all contacts with respect.

  • Support and participate in activities that foster customer service.

  • Communicate and follows the organizational chain of command for notification of patient care/service issues, when appropriate.


  • Maintains required applicable licensure, certification and education.

  • Attends and successfully completes general and department orientation, in-service programs and the annual key competencies and mandatory update requirements.

  • Participates actively in department staff meetings

  • Demonstrates effective verbal and written communications

  • Demonstrate knowledge and performs work that is consistent with established age-specific policies and procedures, including but not limited to, identifying the need for additional safety measures, or activities that place patients at risk, specimen collection, processing and selection of appropriate equipment in all phases of testing (pre, analytical and post). Communicate pertinent age-specific information to all clients when needed. Communicates effectively in a clear, concise, understandable manner.

  • Perform automated and manual procedures, applying quality control procedures to establish validity: a) General Laboratory that includes Chemistry, Hematology, Urinalysis, Coagulation, Blood Bank, Immunology and Serology or b) Microbiology.

  • Review, release and report test results, recognizing unexpected and notifiable results and taking appropriate actions.

  • Collect specimens and take them to the laboratory for analysis, using appropriate or specified equipment for collecting and handling specimens appropriate for their priority and stability. Follow established labeling policies and procedures.

  • Oversee, coordinate and assume the validity of technical functions and activities of unlicensed staff.

  • Perform all calibration, quality control and takes appropriate corrective action when required, prepares reagents, instrument check and preventive maintenance and maintains related records.

  • Troubleshoot problems related to methodology, systems and instrumentation.

  • Perform all appropriate computer-related functions, including monitoring and following up reports such as incomplete worklists, critical result logs, etc.

  • Follow through on established policies and procedures related to monitoring workflow and staffing levels as directed by Laboratory Supervisor or Director.

  • Request, monitors and stock supplies as necessary to keep materials on hand at all times.

  • Demonstrate willingness & ability to float to areas within their scope of practice as necessary.

  • Coordinate and facilitate adherence to pre-scheduled meal and break periods.

  • Coordinate and facilitate adherence to pre-defined rotating work area assignments for phlebotomists.

  • Ensure specimens are being processed and entered into laboratory workflow in a timely manner.

  • Perform troubleshooting on and investigates issues related to specimens considered missing or lost.

  • Take accountability and responsibility for outside inquiries related to the status of a lab order. Responsible for coordinating and facilitating work process to locate lab order. Responsible for communicating status of lab order to involved parties.

  • Be an active participant in seeking solutions to shift concerns/issues. Responsible for reporting concerns, within a timely manner, to management.

  • Communicate effectively with physicians and nursing as it relates to status or disposition of a lab test or order.

  • Report any instances of staff altercation or misconduct verbal or otherwise to management immediately.

  • Report any potential safety concerns to management in a timely manner.

  • Function as a team member, contributing to ensuring smooth daily operations, and showing care for the patient’s/customer’s overall general welfare.

  • Demonstrate willingness to perform tasks generally designated to be done by others, when the need arises.

  • Demonstrate organizational skills including prioritization and time management

  • Utilize appropriate resources, including engaging management, when indicated to resolve conflicts, solve problems and achieve goals.

Required qualifications for this position include:

  • Bachelor's Degree

  • Valid Clinical Laboratory Scientist California License

  • Current LA City Fire Card within 30 days of hire

Preferred qualifications for this position include:

  • 2 years experience after Clinical Lab Scientist licensure as a Generalist and in Bloodbank

  • Experience as a Shift Lead in the Laboratory
